HOW TO MAKE DRUGS (and Feel Great About Everything): an Explosive Documentary Exposing the Hidden Human Cost of Animal Testing

We’re all told to trust medicine—but what if the system it’s built on is broken? Every year, companies use and kill millions of animals in cruel drug tests, yet few people stop to ask why, at what cost, and whether these tests even work. From Keegan Kuhn—the co-producer of the groundbreaking documentaries Cowspiracy and What the Health—comes a new film that goes down the rabbit hole of Big Pharma’s dangerous and failed reliance on animal testing: HOW TO MAKE DRUGS (And Feel Great About Everything).

The explosive documentary is now available for rent or purchase on Vimeo. Watch the trailer now to get a glimpse into the eye-opening exposé of the drug industry’s dirty secret:

“Animal testing is perhaps one of the most divisive issues in our society, with just over half of Americans polled being against it, but there is a story that isn’t being told about the cost of human life due to failed animal testing methods.” –Keegan Kuhn

Uncovering the Colossal Failures of Experiments on Animals

Told through the voices of medical experts and several PETA staff members, HOW TO MAKE DRUGS exposes how drug tests and medical experiments on animals have repeatedly failed—not producing cures, treatments, or even reliable results for humans.

“You’re not running for a cure, you’re running from a cure.”

Penicillin is lethal to guinea pigs. Aspirin is toxic to dogs. These stark examples show what many experts have long known: Our physiology and biology are completely different from those of other animals. What’s “safe” in a laboratory test on animals may be deadly—or at best, useless—for humans.

The statistics are shocking: 95% of all new drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animals fail or cause harm in human clinical trials. And 90% of basic research, most of which involves animals, never results in any treatment or cure for humans.

What Are Animals Suffering For?

Mice, rats, rabbits, frogs, dogs, cats, monkeys, and countless others suffer in experiments that waste valuable time, resources, and money. Before experimenters kill them, animals can be put through procedures that force them to inhale toxic fumes, endure being immobilized in restraint devices for hours, have holes drilled into their skulls, their spinal cords crushed, or other unimaginably painful procedures.

Watch the Film—Then, Take Action

Mice sing to each other, rats love to cuddle with their families, and rabbits “purr” when they’re happy. Our fellow animals are not laboratory equipment—they feel joy, pain, and fear, just like we do.

The animal testing industry is harming us all—and YOU can help us do something about it. PETA’s Research Modernization Now program outlines a strategy for phasing out cruel, useless experiments on animals and instead focusing on modern, non-animal research methods.
