Epcot Ejects PETA Supporters From Canada Pavilion for Protesting Seal Slaughter
Epcot’s World Showcase featured an unexpected attraction on Thursday, when four PETA supporters took over the Canada Pavilion while holding signs reading, “Now in Canada: Seal Slaughter!”—until they were ejected by police.
“Canada just pledged $5.7 million in taxpayer money to revive the dead seal-fur trade, so PETA brought the news to tourists at Epcot’s Canada Pavilion,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “As long as Canada subsidizes cruelty to animals, it can expect to be confronted about it at home and abroad.”
People around the world are rejecting Canada’s seal slaughter because of its cruelty to the young seals who are shot and clubbed in the head. Within Canada, the slaughter has become an issue of government waste. All major markets for seal pelts have now closed, and just last month, Member of Parliament Ryan Cleary of Newfoundland questioned Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials on the $5.7 million budget for sealing and where exactly they hope to find buyers willing to purchase seal products. PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear,” is calling for an end to the slaughter.
