Collina Strada and PETA Drop New Shirt in Support of NYC’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban
Wear your heart for horses on your sleeve. PETA and New York–based fashion brand Collina Strada—the iconic creator of the first vegan-friendly UGG boots—have joined forces on a must-have limited-edition shirt for everyone who wants to see New York City’s horse-drawn carriage industry left in the dust. Launched as City Council members consider Romanch’s Law—a bill to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in the city—the collaboration gives equine advocates a bold way to support a future without cruel carriage rides.
Why Romanch’s Law Matters
This collaboration arrives at a pivotal moment.
In June, a 16-year-old horse named Deniz collapsed and died while being forced to pull a carriage in Central Park. Just days later, a carriage crash killed 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan. The legislation now known as Romanch’s Law was originally named after Ryder, a carriage horse who collapsed on a Manhattan street. Video footage showed him struggling to get up while reports indicated his driver slapped him, whipped him, and screamed at him.
Why Horses Need Our Help
Carriage rides are no walk in the park for horses made to haul them. Operators force them through chaotic city streets, where they dodge cars, inhale exhaust fumes, and pound the hard pavement all day long in sweltering summers and freezing winters. Many suffer respiratory ailments, painful leg and hoof problems, and injuries from accidents.
Take Action
Horses aren’t taxis. They’re intelligent, social individuals who want to run, play, spend time with their friends, and raise their families—not haul tourists through traffic.
Please urge New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin to fast-track Romanch’s Law and ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City.
