From much of the same team that brought the tiger cub–breeding industry to the world in Netflix’s Tiger King, the upcoming HBO docuseries Chimp Crazy details the tragic consequences of believing that chimpanzees are simply hairier humans. Even though chimpanzees share 98% of our DNA, they don’t want to be humans’ playmates or roommates.

The four-episode series examines PETA’s lawsuit against the former breeding compound misleadingly called the Missouri Primate Foundation; its operator, breeder Connie Casey; and exotic-animal broker Tonia Haddix. The riveting footage tells the stories of chimpanzees who were abused and exploited in the entertainment industry and the pet trade. Through compelling video footage and interviews, including with PETA attorneys and PETA Honorary Director Alan Cumming, the series shares almost unbelievable details of the lengths that some people in the industry go to harbor and subjugate these complex great apes.

This is must-see TV.

Be sure to tune in when the first episode drops on August 18 on Max (HBO’s streaming service)—you’ll be floored by what you see. Keep coming back here for updates on all the cases discussed in the series and PETA’s groundbreaking work in behalf of captive chimpanzees.
