From the Streets of Cancún to Celebration: Confetti Gets a New ‘Leash’ On Life, Thanks to PETA’s Spay/Neuter Clinics
Just a short trip from where vacationers were lounging on sandy beaches, PETA’s team was hard at work in Cancún and Chichimilá—providing vital care for hundreds of animals in need. Meet some of the animals we helped during our 16th spay/neuter clinic in the underserved areas, where we sterilized a total of 394 cats and dogs and provided veterinary care, food, vaccinations, education to guardians, and more!

A Dog Found on the Streets Quickly Became the Life of the Party
With a name like Confetti, it’s only fitting that this sweet dog now has something to celebrate. After being rescued from the streets of Cancún and brought to a local shelter, he met PETA’s team—and his life changed forever. Now in our care, Confetti is trading the dangers of street life for the hope of finding a loving home.

Confetti is one of the many animals who left the Cancún clinic with a new “leash” on life. In collaboration with Direccion de Protecion y Bienstar Animal, our staff sterilized 201 animals in just one day and provided nail trims, collars, vaccinations, and treatment for fleas, ticks, worms, and mange. Planned Pethood International also organized the vets and medical volunteers.
Sparking Change in Chichimilá
In Chichimilá, another dog’s story touched our hearts. Blanquita had been abandoned inside a house for weeks before a compassionate local took her in. At our clinic, staff spayed her, giving her a happier, more comfortable life.

In one day, we sterilized 193 animals in Chichimilá while working with staff from Ayuntamiento de Chichimilá. Mayor Francisco Medina Martin made an appearance at the clinic to encourage community turnout—and the residents did not disappoint.

We also provided much-needed veterinary care to dogs, including one who had a chain embedded in their neck. Staff clipped and cleaned the wound, sterilized the dog, and discussed with the owner why keeping dogs on chains is cruel.

Curbing the Companion Animal Homelessness Crisis, One Clinic at a Time
Free and low-cost spay/neuter clinics are a vital step in curbing animal companion overpopulation and homelessness, especially in underserved communities where there are fewer resources available. Homeless cats and dogs suffer on the streets, where they can contract deadly illnesses, starve, get hit by cars, or be killed by cruel humans. Sterilization stops the cycle before it starts, preventing countless animals from being born into a world that cannot care for them.
For years, PETA Latino has been on the front lines, visiting communities throughout Quintana Roo and providing free sterilization surgeries to thousands of animals. This ongoing work has apparently not gone unnoticed by local leaders. Just recently, Governor Mara Lezama launched mobile spay/neuter clinics to bring these life-saving services directly to the residents and companion animals who need them most.
