Breaking news! Another horse used for carriage rides in New York City is dead. Find out more about this developing story and how you can help horses forced to pull carriages.

The horse, Lady, collapsed near the busy intersection of 51st Street and 11th Avenue.

How PETA Is Standing Up for Horses Used for Carriage Rides

The morning after her death, a swarm of compassionate New Yorkers joined PETA and NYCLASS’s emergency rally outside the Clinton Street “stables” (a high-rise building) in Hell’s Kitchen, where Lady was kept when not dragging tourists through city streets.

Dozens of protesters held signs demanding that the City Council pass Ryder’s Law, which would ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City. Among the gathered supporters were Ryder’s Law sponsors: Council Members Bob Holden, Erik Bottcher, and Christopher Marte. They each passionately urged their fellow council members to pass the ban without delay.

On August 11, 2025, PETA erected a sky-high message of Lady’s lifeless body sprawled on the pavement.

PETA’s billboard stands above the intersection of 51st Street and 11th Avenue like a gravestone, marking the place where Lady collapsed and died.

Lady’s death occurred just 5 days before the anniversary of Ryder being worked to near-death. On August 10, 2022, Ryder, also used for carriage rides, collapsed on Ninth Avenue and lay there for over an hour—with no veterinary care—while his driver slapped him, whipped him, and screamed at him to get up. PETA exposed this horror on social media within minutes.

Making horses pull loads like carriages is cruel. Owners force horses to toil in extreme weather conditions, dodge traffic, and pound the pavement all day long. The horses may develop respiratory ailments from breathing exhaust fumes and can develop debilitating leg problems due to walking on hard surfaces.

PETA is calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages to protect horses like Ryder and Lady from being worked to death by this merciless industry—and we need your help.

Lady, Ryder, and All Horses Exploited for Carriage Rides Need YOUR Help

Never take carriage rides pulled by horses, and explain to your family and friends why they shouldn’t, either. If your city allows horse-drawn carriages on its streets, urge your legislators to propose legislation that will ban them.
