Another Monkey Dies at OHSU’s Cruel and Useless Oregon Primate Prison
Update (July 17, 2025): Another monkey suffered a gruesome and wholly preventable death due to staff negligence at Oregon National Primate Research Center, according to records PETA obtained.
Staff found the monkey dead after his arm became trapped in chain-link fencing, leaving him exposed to inescapable injuries at the hands of other stressed monkeys in the cage.
OHSU is clearly incapable of keeping monkeys safe, inside the laboratory and out. Please take action today by urging the university to shut down the cruel Oregon National Primate Research Center before another monkey dies.

PETA has learned from whistleblower reports that senior leadership at the violation-plagued Oregon National Primate Research Center is reportedly telling staff to stop documenting animal injuries and other conditions that might run afoul of federal law.

We’re now demanding that the U.S. Department of Agriculture investigate this apparent Don’t See, Don’t Tell cover-up strategy at Oregon Health & Science University’s primate center, based on the whistleblowers’ accounts.
Swept Under the Bloodied Rug
The primate center has a lengthy, years-long rap sheet of animal torment and animal welfare violations, leading to increased public scrutiny and recent calls from Oregonians to close the failed monkey laboratory. Rather than fixing its problems and providing animals with better care, the primate center is allegedly test-driving a strategy of cover-ups and shirking accountability.
According to whistleblowers, key details about serious incidents, including animals suffering gruesome injuries, are deliberately withheld from formal staff reports at leadership’s direction. The insiders also say that staff are being told to report only the bare minimum information and use vague language to close cases quickly and avoid unwanted public attention.

Monkeys escaping from their cages or sustaining traumatic injuries from fights with other monkeys are just a few of the problems that are reportedly going undocumented. Without proper records, sick and injured monkeys suffer from prolonged conditions that go undetected and untreated. Minor injuries can worsen, become infected, and develop into painful pustules and more, without timely veterinary care.
Shut Down the Monkey Lab
Please TAKE ACTION and urge Oregon Health & Science University to shut down the cruel and failed Oregon National Primate Research Center:
If you live in the U.S., please contact your members of Congress and urge them to shut off the funding to the seven National Primate Research Centers TODAY.
