Adoptable Animal: PETA Is Helping Blu Shake the Blues
When families get overwhelmed with work, school, and child-care commitments, sometimes the canine family member’s needs take a back seat. That’s exactly what happened to Blu.
The family had the best of intentions when they took in Blu (who’d been a stray) two years ago. They knew the tiny Chihuahua/Jack Russell terrier mix wasn’t safe on the streets and needed a home.
But sometimes, even the best-laid plans go awry. Blu’s caretaker is a full-time student with two kids and another on the way. With so many other demands on her time, she took shortcuts with the dog’s care, keeping her confined to a crate all day, skipping walks and routine grooming, and failing to get timely treatment for a skin condition that she developed.
Luckily for Blu, her neighbor just happens to be a member of PETA’s Emergency Response Team. When she saw that the busy family had their hands full, she offered to help out by taking the dog for walks, trimming her overgrown toenails, supplying her with high-quality food, treating her skin condition with medicated shampoo, and “dogsitting” her several days a week.
Matters came to a head recently when it dawned on Blu’s guardian that she’ll only be busier once the new baby arrives and that the pup needs more care than she can provide. She begged the PETA staffer for help finding Blu a home where she can truly blossom.
We know that Blu’s winning combination of blonde good looks; an easygoing, affectionate, and playful personality; and a fondness for kids, cats, and other dogs is sure to be the perfect fit for a family that’s just 7 pounds shy of being complete. “She always wants to be near her people. She’s like a little shadow,” says her smitten dogsitter. “She’s curious about what’s happening at any given moment but knows how to chill out when needed. I really can’t express what a sweet temperament she has—she just loves love.”
