Prost to the best plant-powered wurst! As Oktoberfest celebrations kick off across the country, PETA is raising a stein to 10 restaurants serving standout vegan sausages with its Top Vegan Sausage Awards.
PETA’s bierhalle-of-fame spans from coast to coast and includes the Vegan Banger at New Orleans hotspot Dat Dog, a vegan bratwurst served on a toasty sourdough bun and piled high with sauerkraut, dill relish, grilled onions, tomatoes, and Creole mustard; the Field Roast Vegan Sausage at Gerhard’s Brats in Minneapolis, served with customizable toppings ranging from sauerkraut and diced onions to hot peppers and Düsseldorf mustard; and the signature house-made seitan Vegan Brat at The Vanguard in Milwaukee. In Florida, diners can tuck into the Wegan Wurst at Hollerbach’s German Restaurant in Sanford or get their Schuhplattler on in St. Petersburg with the Vegan Mushroom Sausage and Vegan Curry Sausage at The German Knodle.

“From bangers to handcrafted brats, these vegan sausages deliver the Oktoberfest flavor people crave with the bonus that no bite harms pigs or cows,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is raising a stein to these restaurants for showcasing delicious sausage traditions that leave animals in peace, not in pieces.”
Rounding out PETA’s vegan brat pack are the Vegan Wurst at Urban German Wursthaus in Portland, Oregon; the classic Vegan Bratwurst at Hofbräuhaus Cleveland in Ohio; the Beyond Bratwurst and Beyond Spicy Italian sausages at Fassler Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the smoky, herb-flecked Field Roast Smoked Apple & Sage Plant-Based Sausage at Leavenworth Sausage Garten in Leavenworth, Washington; and the Vegan Wurst at The Schnitzel Garten in Eagle, Idaho. Each winner will receive a framed certificate from PETA along with bragging rights.
Pigs are soothed by music, and cows mourn when a loved one dies or when they’re separated from each other. Yet in the meat industry, workers cut off pigs’ tails and teeth and castrate the males—all without any pain relief—and confine cows to cramped, filthy feedlots before sending both to slaughter at a fraction of their natural lifespans. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help anyone looking to make the switch.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
