Los Angeles – Alicia Silverstone has a message for any holiday shoppers still clueless about cruelty to sheep used for wool, which she details in a new radio campaign for PETA. The 30-second spot is part of PETA’s #WoolFreeWinter initiative and will play this month in cities across the U.S., including Silverstone’s hometown of San Francisco. California is a top wool-producing state.
“Think shearing sheep for wool is just like a haircut? As if! … [W]orkers have been caught punching, kicking, and stomping on sheep,” Silverstone explains. “And 90% of sheep are killed once their wool production drops.”
The vegan actor urges listeners to “embrace fabrics that are comfortable, innovative, and cruelty-free,” such as those on our list of Wool-Free Sweaters Alicia Silverstone Would Love. These eco-friendly options are kinder to sheep and the planet, as they also avoid wool-industry pollutants, which contaminate air, water, and land.
Silverstone is part of a long list of celebrities—including Elisabetta Canalis, Penélope Cruz, Jenna Dewan, Taraji P. Henson, Eva Mendes, Olivia Munn, and P!nk—who have helped PETA promote kinder wardrobe choices.
