Who Will Take the Cake? PETA Announces Canada’s Top 10 Vegan Doughnuts

Cue the sprinkles, because just in time for National Doughnut Day (June 5), PETA is recognizing the top 10 Canadian shops that dish up the most delectable doughnuts without using eggs or dairy. From matcha custard-filled delights in Toronto to chocolate strawberry rings in Vancouver, these shops are proving that the tastiest treats deliver fabulous flavor without a crumb of cruelty.

The standout sweets include the glazed Passion Fruit perfection from Léché Desserts in Montreal, the fluffy brioche London Fog Lavender from Bronuts & Coffee in Winnipeg, and Bramble Café’s Mango Coconut tropical dream in Halifax. Over in Saskatoon, Darkside Donuts is living up to its name with its Darkside Dip covered in dark chocolate glaze and white sprinkles, and Hoopla Donuts has Calgarians flipping for its melt-in-your-mouth Canadian classic Maple Cake doughnut.

For a unique bite, Toronto’s Machino Donuts offers a Matcha Bomboloni doughnut filled with matcha whipped custard and rolled in matcha sugar. And while you’re in The 6ix, stop by Lucky’s Doughnuts for its gluten-friendly Chocolate Strawberry Ring dipped in strawberry glaze and topped with strawberry powder. In Montreal, lemon lovers will fall in love with La Beignerie’s cream-filled maple-flamed meringue Lemon Heart, andthe Lemon Drop fromMmm Donuts in Ontario is a custard-filled creation rolled in coconut with lemon icing. And be sure to pick up a scrumptious Salted Caramel from Prince Edward Island’s Get Caked Donuts while they’re open from June through October.

Chickens enjoy taking dust baths and roosting in trees, and cows develop friendships over time. Yet in the egg industry, hens are crammed into wire cages or packed into filthy sheds where they can’t even spread their wings, and in the dairy industry, mother cows are forcibly impregnated, and their beloved calves are torn away from them shortly after birth so that humans can take their milk. Just like the animals who are violently killed for meat, hens’ and mother cows’ lives end at the slaughterhouse.

Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
