Westminster Dog Show opening day attendees will be met by gasping, struggling “dogs” carrying oxygen tanks, a display designed to condemn those who profit from creating and selling breathing-impaired breeds (BIBs) whose distorted airways cause them to snort and struggle to breathe throughout their lives.
The condemnation comes from on high too, as PETA has placed three giant billboard messages directly across from the Javits Center—where breeders will put their dogs through the canine “beauty pageant”—an exercise that demonstrates the stark difference between the skull and snout of a healthy dog and that of a pug or French bulldog. The boards invite any BIB guardians facing exorbitant veterinary bills as a result of breeding deformity to visit PETA.org/BredToSuffer.
“Flat-faced dogs snort, wheeze, and gasp for air because greedy breeders create them with extreme and unnatural features, robbing them of the ability to breathe normally, run, play, or experience other joys that make a dog’s life worthwhile, without gasping for air,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges everyone to help stop the demand that keeps breeders churning out sick and deformed pups despite their lifelong suffering by never buying these breathing-impaired dogs.”
Where: Javits Center Main Entrance, 445 11th Ave., New York
When: Saturday, January 31, 12 noon

PETA’s billboards are located at 11th Avenue and 37th Street, directly across from the Javits Center.
