Walmart shoppers will get an eyeful on Saturday, when a “chicken” will lead a PETA protest against the retailer over its ties to Trillium Farm Holdings, an egg producer whose widespread, severe abuse of hens has just been exposed in a PETA undercover investigation.

When:    Saturday, September 12, 12:30 p.m.

Where:    Walmart, 844 N. Colony Rd. (at the intersection with Beaumont Road), Wallingford

The protesters will screen footage from the investigation, in which hundreds of dead hens were found, many left to decompose alongside the survivors in small, cramped cages. PETA’s investigator documented that a severely injured bird was still alive in a trash bin—a supervisor had clumsily attempted but failed to kill the bird and let her suffer for two more days before another worker finally killed her. Another worker was seen pulling a live hen’s head off with his hands.

“Chickens are curious individuals who have distinct personalities, but most importantly, they feel pain and fear as intensely as any human does,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is calling on Walmart to reconsider its ties with this supplier and asking kind people to choose vegan foods that no animal suffered for.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. The group is also holding protests outside other Walmart stores in cities in the U.S. and Canada.
