After PETA shared with high-end knitwear brand ZANKOV a new video exposé revealing that terrified goats are beaten and left with bleeding wounds in the mohair industry, designer Henry Zankov personally confirmed to PETA that his label will stop using mohair in its designs. In thanks for the kind move, PETA hand-delivered delicious vegan chocolates to Zankov at his studio in Diane von Furstenburg’s Chelsea headquarters today, where he now operates his namesake brand and serves as the new Artistic Director of DVF.

“ZANKOV is embracing a kinder future for fashion by cutting ties with the cruel mohair industry, which leaves terrified goats bloodied and screaming in pain,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is celebrating ZANKOV’s compassionate move and reminds shoppers everywhere to always check labels and reject anything made from animals’ stolen coats.”

PETA notes that mother goats form strong bonds with their babies and that both mother and baby recognize each other’s distinct calls—or “bleats”—shortly after birth. PETA Asia’s undercover investigation into mohair operations in Lesotho and South Africa—which took place at several facilities certified by the misleadingly named “Responsible Mohair Standard”—documented workers violently striking goats with brooms and poles, goats screaming in pain and fear as they were shorn , and the bodies of several dead goats, including a baby goat, discarded in a heap.

ZANKOV joins numerous worldwide brands—including Zara, Gap, Banana Republic, ASOS, UNIQLO, Ralph Lauren, and Express—that have banned mohair after hearing from PETA. PETA is calling on Paul Smith to follow suit.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a goat is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
