Munich – Following meetings with PETA Germany, BMW has announced that it will launch fully vegan car interiors—including seats and formerly leathery tricky bits like steering wheel and gearshift covers—for BMW and MINI models beginning in 2023, and PETA Germany is sending BMW executives a gift basket of vegan goodies in thanks. Below, please see a statement from PETA Germany founder and PETA President Ingrid Newkirk:

After PETA Germany pointed out that vegan car interiors spare up to eight sensitive cows’ lives per car and slash carbon emissions, BMW hit the gas on this new animal- and eco-friendly option. PETA is celebrating this latest signal that the automotive industry is upshifting to a leather-free future, which everyone can join by driving a vegan car off the lot.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
