Ahead of Thanksgiving, in one of the top turkey-producing provinces in Canada, a flock of PETA supporters will hand out free vegan Gardein Turk’y Roasts to passersby downtown on Sunday. The giveaway will take place just outside St. Mary’s Square Shopping Center and a stone’s throw from PETA’s plea urging viewers not to have a hand in birds’ suffering by going vegan.
When: Sunday, October 5, 1 PM
Where: Outside St. Mary’s Square Shopping Center at 1507 Rte 52

“Just like humans, turkeys are thinking, feeling beings who want to spend time with their families and don’t want to be killed for someone’s meal,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “This Thanksgiving, PETA encourages everyone to make compassion their centerpiece by serving a savory vegan feast that lets turkeys live in peace.”
In nature, turkeys can live for over 10 years and spend their days caring for their young, building nests, and roosting in trees. But those raised for food are slaughtered within their first six months of life—and millions are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone. Workers hang the young birds upside down, drag them through an electrified bath, slit their throats, and dump them into scalding-hot defeathering tanks—often while they’re still conscious.
Every person who goes vegan saves nearly 200 animals each year from daily suffering and a terrifying death, dramatically shrinks their food-related carbon footprint, and slashes their risk of developing cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
PETA’s message is located on the bench near the entrance to St. Mary’s Square Shopping Center.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
