Families scrambling to find a kinder, more affordable Easter activity than dyeing dozens of expensive eggs can thank their lucky starch as a hot new item has just taken root in the PETA Shop: A potato decorating kit! While egg prices are currently through the roof due to the ongoing bird flu outbreak, ready-to-dye tubers are economical, convenient (no cooking required!), and go easy on hens, who aren’t caged in crowded conditions to produce them.
Each DIY bundle comes packed with everything needed for a hopping good time that doesn’t harm a hare on any animals’ head—including Watkins™ Assorted Food Coloring, painting supplies, googly eyes, mouth and nose stickers, curly “hair,” and PETA Kids sticker sheets—all tucked into an adorable bunny burlap sack.
“There’s no need to shell out for expensive Easter eggs with this delightful spud decorating kit, which is kind to both birds and budgets,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to take a crack at a wonderful new Easter tradition that leaves hens in peace and is guaranteed to put a smile on any tot’s face.”
Chickens form complex social structures, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do. Yet hens used for egg production are crammed together inside wire-floored cages or filthy sheds where they don’t even have enough room to spread their wings. Once their egg production drops, they’re sent to slaughterhouses where their throats are slit—often while they’re still conscious—and many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.
PETA points out that breeding and raising animals for food creates hotspots for potentially deadly zoonotic diseases, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that three out of every four new or emerging infectious diseases in humans are transmitted due to contact with animals, including those used in animal agriculture. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help anyone thinking of making the switch.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
