One of Hollywood’s most recognizable voices has joined forces with PETA to captivate young audiences with a moo-ving tale. Award-winning actor, father of eight, grandfather to daughter Ireland Baldwin’s baby, and longtime PETA supporter Alec Baldwin narrates a new children’s book, Harvey and the Lightning Herd, co-authored by The Cow Sanctuary founder Helga Tacreiter and PETA. Available for purchase on Audible, the book tells the sweet story of Tacreiter’s friendship with a tiny calf named Harvey and how nursing him back to health—after a disastrous storm left him injured—led her to open an animal sanctuary. An excerpt from the audiobook can be heard here.

Harvey and the Lightning Herd is a heartwarming tale of friendship and a testament to the power of kindness and compassion that children will enjoy and learn from,” says Baldwin. “I’m delighted to lend my voice to Harvey’s story, and I hope it inspires children and parents alike to embrace their empathy for all living, feeling beings.”

Based on a true story, the book describes how Harvey was one of six calves who survived after lightning struck a tree on a farm where Tacreiter worked. She vowed to save all six calves and formed a special bond with Harvey. He inspired the faux-fur “cowches”—life-size plush likenesses of real cows—that she handcrafted and sold so she could buy an 80-acre farm, now the site of The Cow Sanctuary.

Paperback copies of Harvey and the Lightning Herd are available for sale on Amazon and at the PETA Shop, where readers can bundle their purchase with a stuffed animal called “The Cow Sanctuary Plush Pal.” All proceeds go directly to The Cow Sanctuary.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
