San Jose, Calif. – Please see the following statement from PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding SRI International’s Official Warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for its violations of federal animal welfare regulations:

Pumping a test material into a monkey’s lungs instead of the animal’s stomach is sheer incompetence. A just-released federal report obtained by PETA reveals that SRI International has received an Official Warning from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act. The warning won’t undo the trauma and agony endured by a monkey in SRI’s laboratories, but it shows that the institute should get out of the dirty, bloody business of animal experimentation and redirect its resources toward modern, non-animal research methodologies that will actually help humans—and we urge officials there to adopt PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
