Simply the Zest! Key West Bakery Wins Big in PETA’s Best Vegan Key Lime Pie Awards

Ahead of Pi Day (March 14), PETA has calculated the best vegan Key lime pies from around the Sunshine State with its first-ever Kind Lime Pie awards—and Key West’s own Moondog Cafe & Bakery has nabbed a spot on the list. The eatery’s delectable mini vegan Key lime pie features smooth citrus curd with a hint of tropical coconut in a luscious pâte sucrée shell, topped with toasted meringue and garnished with fresh lime zest.

“Moondog Café & Bakery is serving up a sublime take on Florida’s state pie, concocting a decadent dessert that’s bursting with flavor without using a single egg or splash of milk,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “Every winner on PETA’s list is showing that any way you slice it, vegan Key lime pies are a sweet deal for both confection connoisseurs and animals.”

PETA notes that in addition to being a treat for the taste buds, vegan desserts are kind to mother cows, whose calves are taken away from them on dairy farms, and to mother hens, who are caged and used as egg-producing machines until their bodies give out and they’re sent to slaughter. Moondog Cafe & Bakery will receive a framed award certificate from PETA, along with bragging rights. Other winners on PETA’s list include Christopher’s Kitchen in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens, Green Zebra Cafe in Sarasota, Stephanie’s Vegan Bakery + Cafe in Fort Lauderdale, and Valhalla Bakery in Orlando and Saint Petersburg.
