Pot o’ gold…er, green! This morning, PETA sent a letter to Mayor Eric Genrich asking him to encourage his aptly named Green Bay constituents to “go green”—by opting for eco- and animal-friendly vegan fare at least on St. Patrick’s Day and, hopefully, beyond. In exchange, PETA offered to treat the mayor and his councilmembers to a veritable Irish feast of vegan cheese curds, bratwurst, kringles, shepherd’s pie, and green fruits and veggies, including grapes, kiwis, asparagus, apples, and artichokes. And there are lots of vegan beers to wash it all down with!
“Green Bay locals can be a lucky charm for animals, the planet, and their own health simply by going vegan,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to say ‘Sláinte’ to vegan foods and goodbye to harmful meat, eggs, and dairy.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
PETA’s letter to Genrich follows.

The Honorable Eric Genrich
Mayor of Green Bay
Dear Mayor Genrich:
Greentings! I’m writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals—PETA entities have more than 9 million members and supporters globally, including many thousands in Wisconsin—with an offer ahead of Saint Patrick’s Day: Will you please encourage your aptly named Green Bay constituents to “go green” and set an excellent example through plant-based eating at least for the day, as the most eco-friendly and “green” lifestyle is a vegan one? If you agree, we’d love to send you and all the council members delicious vegan treats that are as sustainable as they are scrumptious, including plant-based kringles, cheese curds, bratwurst, and shepherd’s pie as well as fresh green fruits and veggies like grapes, asparagus, apples, artichokes, and kiwis!
Animal agriculture generates approximately 15% of total global greenhouse gas emissions; produces 65% of total nitrous oxide emissions, which has a global heating impact 295 times that of carbon dioxide; and uses nearly 70% of all agricultural land, contributing greatly to biodiversity loss, deforestation, and water pollution.
Beyond the positive environmental benefits, a vegan lifestyle spares sentient beings the suffering inherent in factory farming. By going vegan, we not only help protect the planet but also honor the dignity and lives of all animals. With so many eateries in Green Bay offering delicious plant-based choices—including Kavarna Cafe & Roastery, The Farmacy, and Naturally Delightful bakery—it’s a great time to enjoy cruelty-free foods and support Wisconsin’s crop farmers. Compassion is always in season.
PETA stands ready to assist Green Bay in planting the seeds for a healthier, greener future—one plant-based meal at a time. Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to hearing from you.
Very truly yours,
Ingrid Newkirk
President
