The message of Disclosure Day came to life outside Steven Spielberg’s Manhattan apartment building this afternoon, as PETA supporters dressed as an alien, a deer, and a fox—all featured in the director’s latest blockbuster—delivered a celebratory vegan cake to thank him for bringing a powerful call for empathy to the big screen. Just as the film asks audiences to “Listen,” PETA is urging everyone moved by Spielberg’s message to hear what animals are saying and extend empathy to all living beings.

“Steven Spielberg has spent his career teaching us to see through the eyes of others, and Disclosure Day reminds us that empathy shouldn’t stop at our own species,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk. “There is no need to wait for aliens to land. PETA is asking everyone moved by the film’s message to extend that same compassion now to animals with whom we share the planet by choosing vegan meals and refusing to support industries that cause them to suffer.”

Humans are just one animal among many, and that’s why PETA asks people to recognize that all animals—whether a cow staring down the slaughterhouse knife, a monkey trapped in a laboratory cage, or a fox caught in a trap—can experience love, grief, joy, and pain; want to live; and have inherent worth. Yet despite animals sharing our capacity for all these emotions, billions are treated as nothing more than research tools, food, clothing, or playthings.
