Photo Op: Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show to Draw Giant PETA ‘Ostrich’—With A Message of Thanks!

“Victoria’s Secret: Thanks For Using Fab Faux Feathers!” That’s the message a larger-than-life PETA “ostrich” will send outside the lingerie company’s star-studded fashion show on Wednesday, to thank the brand for showing designers and consumers everywhere how to create killer looks without harming birds when it went feather-free and created gorgeous and innovative vegan Angel wings. The move came after PETA informed the brand—which had previously used up to 620,000 feathers from chickens, Chinese pheasants, and ostriches for a single fashion show—about the cruel ways birds are raised and killed for their feathers.
“Victoria’s Secret has set a new high bar for designers by using innovation and creativity to showcase gorgeous feather-free designs,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “By rocking the catwalk without harming birds, these angels have truly earned their wings.”

Why: In their natural habitat, ostriches form strong social bonds and nurture their young for up to three years. But as revealed in a PETA exposé, workers forcibly restrain scared young ostriches and slit their throats before tearing the feathers from their still-warm bodies, sometimes in full view of their flockmates. Other birds fare no better—peacocks, pheasants, emus, turkeys, and chickens all endure miserable lives on crowded farms and painful deaths so that their feathers can be used for fashion.
