A Little Girl's Honest, Heartfelt Prayer Stirs Everyone at the Table in 'Grace' Ad, Running Soon for PETA's ThanksVegan Campaign

Anniston, Ala. – With interest in going vegan at an all-time high, Thanksgiving is fast becoming “ThanksVegan,” and to mark the happy, healthy transition, PETA will run its “Grace” ad, in which a little girl makes a few empathic comments about the real life and death of turkeys while saying grace at the dinner table. The ad will air smack-dab in the middle of classic holiday programming—and may ruffle a few feathers with viewers.
“PETA’s ad will give people food for thought about all the good reasons to have a delicious ThanksVegan meal that gives gentle birds something to be thankful for, too,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “When it comes to having feelings, loving their families, and valuing their lives, turkeys are individuals, just as much as humans are.”
Turkeys are now understood to be caring parents, good flyers, and clever, spirited explorers who can live up to 10 years in nature, while those raised for food are normally slaughtered when they’re between 12 and 26 weeks old. More than 46 million are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone, and 22 million more are slaughtered in December. The young birds are hung by their feet from metal shackles and dragged through an electrified bath, and they’re often still conscious when their throats are slit and they’re dumped into scalding-hot defeathering tanks.
As part of its #ThanksVegan campaign, PETA is also placing pro-turkey billboards across the country, offering animal-friendly holiday cooking tips, protesting outside turkey slaughterhouses that are COVID-19 hotspots, and partnering with restaurants and grocery stores to promote their ready-to-roast vegan turkeys and other animal-free options.

The ad will run on Wednesday, November 18, on the Hallmark Channel between 4 and 7 p.m.
