Tomorrow, PETA’s notorious “Hell on Wheels” truck will roar into Atlantic City—to bring samples of smoky, savory vegan bacon to Back Bay Ale House. The special delivery follows a discussion between PETA and the restaurant’s owner, who agreed to explore adding vegan options. PETA’s road hog—which looks as if it contains real pigs on their way to slaughter—will now visit a new round of Jersey Shore eateries that serve pork on Monday, including Downtown Deli in Margate City.

“Pigs are playful, clever individuals who value their lives and don’t deserve to suffer and die for a fleeting taste of flesh,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “Choosing vegan options is a win for animals, restaurants, and customers alike, and PETA is delighted to help Back Bay Ale House make a compassionate and business-savvy update by bringing home the pig-friendly bacon.”

Where: Back Bay Ale House, 800 N. New Hampshire Ave., Atlantic City

When: Monday, March 30, 10 a.m.

“Hell on Wheels” will then stop outside at Downtown Deli at 8 S. Essex Ave in Margate City at 12 noon.

Why: Pigs dream when they sleep, recognize their own names, and show empathy for other pigs who are happy or distressed. In the meat industry, workers chop off piglets’ tails, clip their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males—all without pain relief. Every year, more than 1 million pigs die, and at least 40,000 others sustain injuries during transport to slaughterhouses. It’s common for pigs on the way to slaughter to suffer from heat exhaustion or even become frozen to the sides of trucks.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
