After decades of animal suffering and deaths, financial mismanagement, bankruptcy, and having its lease terminated by Miami-Dade County, the Miami Seaquarium announced today that it will close its doors on Sunday. Please see the following statement from PETA President Tracy Reiman:
Champagne corks are popping at PETA, following the news that the Miami Seaquarium is finally having to shut its doors after more than 50 long years of imprisoning sick and suffering animals in crumbling concrete tanks, denying them veterinary care, and forcing them to perform tricks. PETA is calling for the survivors to be sent to seaside sanctuaries where they can finally get the care they need and live some semblance of natural lives.
PETA will celebrate outside the Miami Seaquarium as it closes on Sunday.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
