Below, please find a statement from PETA President Tracy Reiman in response to today’s court ruling removing a major hurdle to allowing New York City’s ban on the sale of foie gras—a product made from the grotesquely swollen, diseased livers of force-fed ducks and geese—to finally take effect.
New York City was right to keep the diseased livers of abused birds off the menu, and PETA is cheering the news that the city may finally enforce this ban, helping to spare countless ducks and geese the agony of being force-fed through tubes rammed down their throats.
PETA was part of the coalition of more than 50 organizations, including Voters for Animals Rights, who fought tirelessly for this ban, and will continue fighting until no bird ever suffers for foie gras again.
PETA notes that foie gras production is outlawed in more than a dozen countries, as well as in California. Numerous companies—including Costco, IKEA, Sam’s Club, Target, and Whole Foods—refuse to sell it.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
