Toronto – Below, please find a statement from PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in response to reports that the Halton Regional Police Service is bringing charges of Careless Driving Causing Death against the driver of the pig transport truck that struck and killed longtime animal advocate and PETA supporter Regan Russell:

Today’s charges must be upgraded to reflect the death of a kind and gentle soul who did no wrong. Regan Russell spent her last moments on Earth showing kindness to animals, and everyone can honor her memory by going vegan.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” and we oppose speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.

 Ingrid E. Newkirk
