PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for shooting a dog at least seven times in his legs and back. The dog—an adult black Labrador retriever mix with a rusted chain-type collar around his neck—was discovered dead and bloody around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday near a walking trail in a secluded wooded area off Fountain Road north of Donaldson. Bullet casings, likely from a .45 caliber weapon, were found at the scene.

The suspect has not been identified and may have other animals in their possession—and animal abusers are often repeat offenders who represent a threat to the entire community.

Anyone with information related to this case should contact the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA at 570-345-3540 or Pennsylvania State Police at 570-754-4600.

“This dog endured the agony of being shot over and over and the terror of being abandoned in the woods to bleed out, and whoever attacked him is still at large,” says PETA Sr. Director of Media Relations Heather Carlson. “Nothing can undo this dog’s suffering, but at least the person who caused it can be brought to justice—and PETA is urging anyone with information to come forward immediately before they hurt someone else.”

Earlier in May, PETA awarded a good Samaritan $5,000 for helping police in Long Beach, California, identify and arrest a man caught on camera slamming a puppy to the ground outside an apartment complex in April. The perpetrator was sentenced to three years in prison and has been banned from owning a companion animal for at least 10 years.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
