PETA Drops Drone Footage of Marshall’s Concrete Compound Ahead of March to End Animal Testing

Ahead of Saturday’s kickoff of the historic March to Abolish Animal Testing, PETA is releasing new drone footage of Marshall BioResources’ gigantic North Rose operation. The video, obtained in collaboration with We Animals, shows more than 50 bleak warehouses where tens of thousands of dogs and ferrets are caged and bred for sale to laboratories.

The March to Abolish Animal Testing is a 207-mile, 14-day walk across New York state from Albany to the gates of Marshall BioResources. Thousands of animal allies will call for an end to the cruel and pointless use of animals in experiments while shining a spotlight on one of the nation’s largest suppliers of beagles, cats, and other animals to laboratories.

The event begins Friday, September 11, with a free screening of “The New Gold Standard: Cutting Edge Science That’s Replacing Animal Testing,” featuring PETA scientists Drs. Emily Trunnell and Lisa Jones-Engel, and a question-and-answer session at Spectrum 8 Theaters, 290 Delaware Ave., Albany, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, September 12, the march kicks off with a rally and speeches by PETA Senior Strategist Matthew Braun, actor Alison Pill, Wayne Hsiung of The Simple Heart, Wayne Pacelle of Center for a Humane Economy, march co-directors Gretchen Primack and Ella Magers, and others. The rally at West Capitol Park in Albany will run from 9 a.m. until around 11 a.m. There will be a community march from West Capitol Park to Swinburne Park from approximately 11 a.m. to noon.

The event concludes outside the front doors of Marshall BioResources in North Rose on September 26, where PETA Vice President of Laboratory Investigations, Dr. Alka Chandna, will rally the crowd against animal experimentation. The event will be outside 5800 Lake Bluff Rd., North Rose, and will run from noon to 3 p.m.

“Marshall BioResources imprisons tens of thousands of dogs, cats, ferrets, pigs, and other animals in filthy cages, and sends them to laboratories where they’re poisoned, mutilated, sickened with painful diseases, and killed in experiments that don’t help humans,” says Dr. Chandna. “PETA and thousands of compassionate people will march to the gates of this house of horrors, demanding an end to these cruel and pointless experiments and a shift to superior, human-relevant science.”

Marshall BioResources is one of the world’s largest breeders of animals for experimentation. Whistleblower photos taken at its North Rose facility show ferrets languishing inside dingy wire cages caked with feces. Federal officials have repeatedly cited Marshall for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act by keeping animals in unacceptable conditions and failing to provide veterinary care. Massive disease outbreaks, including canine distemper and bacterial infections, have also plagued Marshall’s facilities.

Video footage from inside a foreign Marshall BioResources facility shows distressed dogs pacing endlessly in feces-strewn cages. An insider alleged that dogs’ cages were cleaned only every two weeks, feeders were moldy, and puppies were often found dead, surrounded by large pools of blood.

PETA recently joined other organizations in submitting a complaint to New York authorities based on inspection reports, photographic evidence, and accounts from a Marshall BioResources insider. The whistleblower reported that an employee stomped on a dog’s neck as sodium pentobarbital was injected into his stomach—causing a sensation akin to “being burned alive from the inside.” Workers hurled dogs “like Frisbees” against cage walls, causing their jaws and heads to shake. And Marshall allowed puppies, desperately searching for warmth on cold days, to suffocate in food pans. The coalition calls on Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan to open a criminal investigation into Marshall.
