Families stopping by the Animal Rescue Club booth at Somerset Academy Losee Campus’ bustling Fall Festival on Saturday were treated to a scrumptious array of vegan cookies, brownies, banana bread, and cinnamon rolls from Cinnaholic, along with Silk non-dairy milks, courtesy of a delicious donation from TeachKind, PETA’s humane education division. The tasty team-up was coordinated by Somerset Academy educator Brianna Chick—a finalist for TeachKind’s 2025 Teacher of the Year Award. Chick and her students are available for interviews.
As the heart of the school’s popular Animal Rescue Club, Chick teaches more than 30 smart cookies to be sweet to animals by guiding them through thoughtful activities, like hosting a virtual Kind FrogTM dissection workshop, screening eye-opening documentaries like Breaking the Chain, and much more. Beyond the club, Chick incorporates humane education into her 8th-grade English and History classes by encouraging students to write persuasively about topics like ending animal testing and the significance of “adopt don’t shop” initiatives.

“Thanks to Brianna Chick’s passion and commitment, Somerset Academy’s Animal Rescue Club is booming and moving young learners to make kind choices for animals,” says PETA Vice President Heather Carlson. “TeachKind is delighted to provide students and their families with vegan treats that give a taste of how sweet compassion can be.”
PETA notes that in addition to being kind to the taste buds, vegan cookies and other plant-powered baked goods are also kind to mother cows, whose calves are taken away from them on dairy farms, and to mother hens, who are caged and used as egg-producing machines until their bodies give out and they’re sent to slaughter. PETA’s free vegan starter kit—and guide to the best store-bought vegan cookies—can help those looking to make the switch. PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. TeachKind offers free presentations, lessons, and other resources to help teachers add compassion to their curricula.
