It’s a vegan fashion victory! After working behind the scenes with PETA, Seattle-based Nordstrom’s young adult brand BP. is now entirely free of animal skins, wool, and other animal-derived fibers. In thanks, PETA is sending the major fashion retailer a Trailblazer for Animals Awardand a box of delicious cow-shaped vegan chocolates.

PETA notes that Nordstrom’s compassionate and business-savvy decision will not only help spare countless animals from being tormented and killed for clothing and accessories but will also appeal to today’s young, conscientious shoppers. Studies show that most Gen Z consumers prioritize purchasing from brands they view as ethical.

“Nordstrom knows that today’s young consumers are choosing ethical, vegan fits that leave cows, sheep, goats, and other animals in peace,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is celebrating Nordstrom for showing how fashionable it is to be vegan and for helping conscientious shoppers keep animals out of their wardrobes.”

Cows have friends, hold grudges against other cows, and mourn when a loved one dies, while sheep and goats can become depressed if they’re separated or isolated from their companions. Cows killed for leather may be skinned and dismembered while still conscious—after they’ve endured castration (for males), branding, and tail docking, all without painkillers. In the wool and mohair industries, terrified sheep and goats are pinned down and left with bloody, gaping wounds as workers quickly and carelessly shear them. And in the angora industry, rabbits are stretched across boards and their fur is violently torn out by the fistful as they scream out in pain.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
