Following the news that actors Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, and Cole Escola are teaming up to give Miss Piggy her close-up in a new movie centered around the Muppet diva, PETA sent a letter today to the talented trio, encouraging them to have the superstar swine stand up for all pigs—as well as frogs, chickens, bears, and whatever Gonzo is—by making her a vegan icon and banning meat from the film’s set.
In the letter, PETA notes that just like Miss Piggy herself, pigs appreciate the finer things in life; they’re soothed by music, maintain good hygiene, and enjoy massages—and the notoriously strong-willed sow would undoubtedly find it easy being green if she saw what her porcine peers endure in the meat industry, where they’re subjected to extreme crowding, routine mutilations without pain relief, a terrifying journey to the slaughterhouse, and a violent, painful death.
“Miss Piggy has always stood up for herself, so it’s only fitting that she’d take a stand against the immense cruelty inflicted upon her real-life counterparts in the meat industry,” says PETA Director of Animals in Film and Television, Lauren Thomasson. “PETA is encouraging the immensely talented creative team behind the Miss Piggy movie to make the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational choice to promote empathy for pigs of all renown by ditching meat on set and incorporating a pro-animal narrative on screen.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
PETA’s letter to Stone, Lawrence, and Escola follows.
Dear Cole, Emma, and Jennifer,
We at PETA were delighted to hear the announcement of your Miss Piggy project! While we understand that there is a great deal to consider when creating a story and production of this magnitude, we hope you will take the opportunity to incorporate messaging that helps real-life pigs, such as by making Miss Piggy vegan! Even a line or two about ditching pork or bacon would go a long way.
With Miss Piggy being the outspoken, courageous pig she is, she would undoubtedly stand up for other pigs and animals widely abused and killed for food across the country. Like Miss Piggy, pigs appreciate the finer things in life; they’re soothed by music, maintain good hygiene, and enjoy massages.
Pigs are also fiercely loyal. Miss Piggy would karate chop the people responsible for what happens on today’s farms, where pigs are confined in cramped, filthy warehouses under constant stress. At slaughterhouses, workers shoot her fellow pigs in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and cut their throat—often while they’re still conscious.
One more small request: considering that each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, lowers their carbon footprint, and reduces their risk of disease, in honor of Miss Piggy and her fellow pigs, won’t you please only serve vegan foods on set?
The Muppets have always brought joy. They can also promote kindness toward animals, whether big birds, frogs, or pigs! Thank you for your consideration.
All the best,
Lauren Thomasson
