As the nationwide shortage of veterinarians worsens and the cost of veterinary care skyrockets, people with sick and/or injured dogs and cats are struggling to find affordable services. To help fill the gap, PETA is partnering with the Halo House—a McDonaugh-based nonprofit organization established by a generous longtime PETA member—to offer scholarships for veterinary and vet tech students at the University of Georgia (UGA) and beyond. Anyone 18 or older who has been accepted into or is currently enrolled in a veterinary medicine program like UGA’s—which is ranked tenth in the nation—may apply if they commit to give back by working with PETA’s low-to-no-cost mobile veterinary clinics for a period of time after completing their degree.
“Shelters are bursting at the seams with animals, and more are abandoned every day in part because many people cannot afford the cost of spaying and neutering,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA is pleased to join Halo House in offering this opportunity to veterinary students at UGA and other schools who are passionate about helping us get closer to the day when every animal born has a wonderful home awaiting.”

For over 20 years, PETA’s mobile clinics have provided free and low-cost spay and neuter surgeries and other services for hundreds of thousands of animals in underserved areas in Virginia and North Carolina, preventing millions of dogs and cats from being born into a world that’s already in the midst of a companion animal overpopulation crisis.
“The Halo House has invested in PETA’s lifesaving community work for over a decade by funding the purchase of one of the mobile clinics in PETA’s fleet,” says the fund’s benefactor. “We’re proud to support the future of veterinary medicine by establishing this scholarship.”
Anyone interested in applying for the Halo House Veterinary Scholarship Fund can do so on PETA’s website.
