New PETA Website Hands Scientists, Officials the Roadmap to Replace Animal Experiments

PETA just launched a new website that could revolutionize science: its newest, most comprehensive Research Modernization NOW is now digital, allowing PETA scientists to update it continuously with the latest science. This comprehensive online resource for scientists, educators, and policymakers is designed to accelerate the transition from ineffective animal experimentation to cutting-edge, human-relevant research methods. The platform showcases PETA scientists’ strategy, which provides concrete steps to end the use of animals, beginning with ending all areas of experimentation on animals that have failed. It outlines evidence-based actions, including conducting systematic reviews to inform policy priorities, redirecting funds away from animal use and toward innovative technologies, implementing ethical harm-benefit analyses, and training the scientific community in superior, animal-free approaches.

“There’s no ethical or scientific reason for harming and killing animals in modern laboratories,” says PETA Director of Science Advancement and Outreach Dr. Emily Trunnell. “PETA’s new Research Modernization NOW website arms scientists and policymakers with the information and strategy they need to abandon experiments on animals and implement innovative methods that are actually relevant to human health.”

Research Modernization NOW also provides evidence that experiments on animals often don’t predict human outcomes and that the current oversight system fails. It highlights the scientific and economic advantages of human-based technologies and the global progress that’s driving a paradigm shift toward superior, ethical science.

The site features more than 40 detailed appendices analyzing why modernization is urgently needed in specific disease areas, including psychiatric conditions, inflammatory disorders, women’s health, animal-to-human transplantation, and more. It also outlines the path forward for medical education, toxicity testing, and laboratory production methods.

Key findings highlighted on the site include:

• Up to 89 percent of preclinical studies—many of which involve animals—cannot be reproduced, a critical failure in scientific research.
• Failure rates for new drugs developed using animal models in specific disease areas exceed 95 percent.

The website showcases innovative, human biology–based technologies, including organoids, organs-on-chips, and other advanced in vitro models, 3D printing, ‘omics studies, and computer modeling.

The full Research Modernization NOW and individual topical sections are available for download. Visitors can also urge members of Congress to introduce legislation enacting the Research Modernization NOW strategy.
