As the Creek fire rages on and state and federal authorities argue over who’s at fault, PETA plans to erect a billboard that calls on people to take action right now and fight climate change with diet change by going vegan.

“Our planet is burning because people are still eating methane-belching animals raised on farms that deforest our land, all while hoping the government will wave a magic wand and make this stop,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging everyone not to wait when we can all do our part to fight climate change every day, starting with breakfast.”

By some estimates, raising and killing animals for food is responsible for more greenhouse-gas emissions than all of the world’s transportation systems combined. Clearing land to raise animals on and to grow crops to feed them is a leading cause of deforestation, including in the rainforest, and the massive amount of water used in animal agriculture contributes to the dry conditions that allow wildfires to spread.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
