Washington – A Washington, D.C., billboard that used to advertise Nellie’s Free Range Eggs now carries a new PETA ad that shows a chicken next to the words “Don’t Buy the ‘Humane’ Lie. All Meat and Eggs Involve Killing. Go Vegan.”

I think you know that last year, PETA Foundation attorneys filed a class-action lawsuit against Nellie’s on behalf of customers who were misled by the company’s depiction of hens on its cartons enjoying space to roam in vast, lush grassy fields and its claims, including “We love our hens, you’ll love our eggs.” The brand makes similar claims on its website—but PETA eyewitness video footage of a Nellie’s egg supplier revealed that around 20,000 hens were crammed into a single crowded shed and severely restricted access to the outdoors.

PETA’s billboard just went up near Union Station—where it’s already attracting droves of people eager to take pictures.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, which is a human-supremacist worldview, and more information about the lawsuit is available here.

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?” READ MORE
