During Allbirds’ annual meeting on Friday, nearly-nude PETA supporters covered in “blood” will descend on the brand’s Hayes Street store and greet shoppers and passersby with signs declaring, “The Naked Truth: Wool Hurts!” to urge Allbirds to switch to vegan wool and other animal-free, eco-friendly materials.

“Every pair of Allbirds sneakers represents the fear and suffering of gentle sheep who are beaten and mutilated in the wool industry,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “By switching to sustainable vegan materials, such as the eucalyptus tree fiber that it’s already using, Allbirds could save lives and make good on its promises to fight the climate catastrophe.”

Why: PETA entities’ exposés of more than 115 wool-industry operations on four continents have exposed extreme and rampant abuse of sheep, who have complex emotions, grow depressed if isolated from their flock, and can even detect anxiety in another sheep by observing their face. A recent PETA Asia-Pacific investigation of Allbirds’ wool supplier, ZQ wool—which the company falsely touts as “humane”—revealed that shearers kicked, beat, and stomped on sheep; sheep were left with gaping wounds that were stitched up without painkillers; and a farmer slit the throat of a struggling, conscious sheep and dumped her body into a trash pit.

The use of wool also violates Allbirds’ stated goal of reversing climate change through better business, as just 1 kilogram of unprocessed wool can generate the same volume of greenhouse gas emissions as driving 100 miles.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
