Minneapolis – After learning about Mayor Jacob Frey’s “plant-based proclamation”—which urged Minneapolis residents to help the environment by choosing vegan meals—PETA sent a letter today thanking him for the effort and offering the assistance of its Vegan Mentor Program.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—is also sending the mayor’s office a box of its free vegan starter kits for distribution.

“From combating climate change to saving animals’ lives to improving our health, going vegan is one of the best choices each of us can make,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Mayor Frey is setting an example of compassion for the world to follow, and PETA stands ready to help any Minneapolis resident who wants to make the switch.”

PETA’s letter to Mayor Frey follows.

August 1, 2018

The Honorable Jacob Frey
Mayor of Minneapolis

Dear Mayor Frey,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 6.5 million members and supporters worldwide—including nearly 10,000 in Minneapolis—thank you for issuing a proclamation encouraging residents to save our planet by eating vegan.

As you’ve pointed out, eating vegan is one of the best ways to help the environment. It also spares more than 200 animals a year the horrors of factory farming, and vegans have lower rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer—some of the biggest killers in the country. Vegan options can be found all over the city, from faux meats at the Herbivorous Butcher to mock duck tacos at MSP Airport’s Republic.

As a sign of our appreciation, we’ll be sending your office a box of PETA’s free vegan starter kits to distribute to residents. They’re packed full of recipes, tips on making the compassionate switch, and more. We also have a free Vegan Mentor Program for residents who are interested in receiving one-on-one support from a personal vegan coach.

Thank you again for being a true leader and setting a wonderful example for your community to follow.

Kind regards,

Danielle Katz
Director

“Almost all of us grew up eating meat, wearing leather, and going to circuses and zoos. We never considered the impact of these actions on the animals involved. For whatever reason, you are now asking the question: Why should animals have rights?” READ MORE
