Long-Tailed Macaques to Remain on Endangered Species List: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA primate scientist Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding the just-released decision of the International Union for Conservation of Nature to keep long-tailed macaques on its endangered species list, despite an attempt by the animal experimentation industry to have the species removed. The Union is requiring an updated reassessment, which could include recent studies that emphasize the critical need for protecting these monkeys:

Bravo to the International Union for Conservation of Nature for basing its decision to protect long-tailed macaques on sound science, not politics. Faced with the animal experimentation industry’s patently transparent attempt to downgrade the status of long-tailed macaques, the union was not influenced by special interests looking to make a fast buck while depleting the Earth’s forests.

This decision should prompt the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service—which needs to take action on the petition submitted by PETA along with other animal protection groups and primate scientists more than a year ago—to provide U.S. federal protection to these monkeys before it’s too late.
