The reaction of shoppers outside the Gulfport Harbor Farmers Market on Wednesday should be priceless as they stumble upon what looks like a roadside slaughterhouse—complete with a “blood-spattered” worker carving up flesh and offering “humane meat”—but this April Fools’ Day display has a twist: The “meat” on the cutting table will be truly surprising!
“Misleading ‘humane’ labels dupe well-intentioned consumers into paying a premium for meat while cows are still crammed into filthy pens, piglets are mutilated with no pain relief, and chickens are bred to grow so fat they can’t walk,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges everyone not to be fooled by comforting marketing myths that do nothing to help animals and to please remember that the only guaranteed humane food is vegan.”
PETA offers a free vegan starter kit for anyone thinking of making the switch.
Where: Outside the Gulfport Harbor Farmers Market – Jones Park, Gulfport
When: Wednesday, April 1, 12 noon

Why: Cows develop friendships over time, pigs show empathy for other pigs who are happy or distressed, and chickens form complex social structures—but in today’s meat, egg, and dairy industries, the animals are raised in filthy, crowded conditions and violently killed. PETA investigators have documented evidence of animals being kicked, slammed, and even sexually abused by workers in these industries—including on farms that deceptively advertise their products with a “humane” label.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
