Before screamo icon Joe Mulherin, AKA nothing, nowhere., kicks off his “Return of the Reaper” tour this April, he serenaded his rescue chickens, Kelly and George, in a sweet new campaign for peta2 to show that “chickens love music, just like us” and deserve respect, compassion, and a life free from violence.

On the road with PETA’s youth division for Warped Tour, Mulherin, who has been vegan for 14 years, says, “I was like anyone else. I’d go and get my cellophane-wrapped piece of meat, and there was a massive disconnection between what happened to that animal and then that animal getting to my plate. People don’t realize that [chickens] have their own personalities, they love affection…How can you love animals and eat them?”
Chickens are social learners who watch and emulate one another. They form strong bonds, dream, and worry about the future, just as humans do—but in the meat industry, chickens are confined by the tens of thousands to severely crowded, filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At slaughterhouses, mechanized blades slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious—and many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.
Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year from daily suffering and a terrifying death. peta2 offers a free Guide to Going Vegan to help those looking to make the switch.
peta2—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers young people positive, empowering actions to help animals. For more information, please visit peta2.com or follow peta2 on TikTok or Instagram.
