A Compassionate Action Award is on its way from PETA to the Chicago Cubs in recognition of the club for stepping up to the plate by protecting a goose who nested in a planter at Wrigley Field last week. The organization closed part of the bleachers near the nest during the team’s home opener against the San Diego Padres, consulted wildlife officials to help manage the situation, and assigned staff to guard the area.

“Baseball season may have just started, but the Chicago Cubs are already winners in PETA’s eyes for going to bat for this goose,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges everyone to follow the Cubbies’ example by giving wildlife space and acting swiftly whenever they see an animal in need.”

The Cubs will receive a framed certificate and delicious vegan chocolates.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
