Giant Snow Globe to Shake Up Shoppers With Grisly Scene of Sheep Suffering for Wool

On Thursday, holiday shoppers strolling near City Hall will get a glimpse of the cruel wool industry courtesy of PETA, as “sheep” inside a giant inflatable snow globe are beaten to demonstrate the violence inflicted on sheep for sweaters, socks, and hats.
“Sheep are thinking, feeling beings with unique personalities, but in the wool industry, they’re punched, kicked, and treated like disposable machines,” says PETA President Tracy Reiman. “This holiday season and all year-round, PETA urges shoppers to leave cruelty off their gift lists and opt for cozy vegan fabrics instead.”

When: Thursday, December 18, 12 p.m.
Why: Sheep can recognize the faces of at least 50 other sheep and will wag their tails when they’re happy. In the wool industry, farmers commonly sever lambs’ tails and castrate the males without pain relief. PETA entities’ exposés of more than 150 wool-industry operations around the world found routine cruelty to sheep, who were beaten, thrown, and slammed to the ground by workers. Because shearers are usually paid by volume, not by the hour, they’re incentivized to work quickly and often leave sheep with gaping, open wounds sewn shut with no pain relief.
