On Friday, ahead of World Day for the End of Fishing (March 29), PETA’s larger-than-life “fish” mascot, Tiffany Tuna, will take to the streets near the Key West Bight Marina with a large, “bloody” hook in her mouth and a sign that proclaims, “Don’t Let Your Kids Become Hookers—Don’t Fish!” PETA’s action is a reminder for families to leave fish in peace and go vegan.
“Fish feel pain and fear just as all other animals do, yet they’re hooked by their mouths, yanked from their aquatic homes, and left to suffocate slowly for ‘sport,’” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA encourages parents everywhere to show their kids what compassion looks like by leaving fish alone and to please go vegan.”
Where: 205 Elizabeth St, Key West (Across the street from Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop)
When: Friday, March 28, 12 noon
Why: Fish have long memories, sing to each other, and some woo potential partners by creating intricate works of art in the sand on the ocean floor. Yet billions of fish die every year in nets and on hooks—some are destined for human consumption, many are tormented just for “sport,” and others are non-target species who are caught or become entangled in fishing gear meant to ensnare other sea life.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA also offers a free vegan starter kit on its website for anyone ready to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
