Holy guacamole! A chicken stares down from a billboard by the Chipotle on Ross Clark Drive, to pose a pointed question: “Would It Kill You to Get a Bean Burrito?” If you thought Chipotle was a meaty eatery, think again: PETA notes that ordering vegan at Chipotle is easy—you can save that chicken’s life by choosing the chain’s tortillas, vegetables, rice, beans, salsas, chips, guacamole, and tofu-powered Sofritas, which are all 100% vegan (and 100% cholesterol-free).

“Chickens are someone, not something, and so PETA is asking customers to give meat the bird and leave hens in peace, not pieces,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk, a vegan for 58 years and still kicking. “Chipotle offers a solid selection of vegan items, making it easy as pie to build a burrito that’s both full of flavor and animal-friendly.”

By now, we know (or should know) what studies show: Chickens form complex social structures, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do—but in the meat industry, chickens are crammed together by the tens of thousands in filthy sheds and bred to grow such unnaturally large breasts that their legs often splinter under the weight. At slaughterhouses, mechanized blades slit their throats—often while they’re still conscious, according to USDA inspection reports—and many go on to drown in scalding hot de-feathering tanks.

PETA’s billboard can be seen next to Chipotle’s Dothan location at 3473 Ross Clark Drive.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is filled with tips to help anyone looking to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
