In time for the holiday, PETA is serving those contemplating a plate of bacon or ham a heaping helping of food for thought, placing an unmissable appeal directly beside the Carl’s Jr. drive-through on S. Virginia Street that shows a real-life mother and piglet snuggling alongside the message, “Everybody’s Somebody’s Baby. Please, Go Vegan This Mother’s Day.”

“Pigs are devoted, attentive mothers, and this day of all days should mean remembering they are someone, not something to kill and eat,” says PETA Founder Ingrid Newkirk, whose experience as a cruelty investigator on farms made her a vegetarian some 50 years ago. “PETA encourages everyone to leave pigs in peace, not pieces, and choose vegan foods on the menu.”
Pigs dream when they sleep, recognize their own names, and show empathy for other pigs who are happy or distressed. In the meat industry, workers chop off piglets’ tails, clip their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males—all without pain relief. Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year; reduces their own risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity; and dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.
PETA’s billboard is located at 5856 S. Virginia St., right next to Carl’s Jr. and close by other bacon-serving eateries, including Two Chicks Café.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
