Canucks wing and superhero for dogs Evander Kane is sliding into action for canines in a new campaign for PETA, urging animal guardians to “give a puck” about their dogs and never leave them alone outside in the cold.

In an accompanying PETA video, the Vancouver native has some choice chirps for people who leave dogs chained outside in the cold, “starving, worried,” calling the behavior “just sickening to see,” and points out that dogs deserve to be treated just like family.

“All your dog wants to do is be inside, giving love, having treats, and just being a part of the family inside the home,” Kane says in the video. “Weather in the winter can lead to quick death. If you do see a dog in this type of situation out in the cold, chained up, it’s important to contact your local authorities, animal control, law enforcement, and, especially if they’re unresponsive, you can always call PETA, as well.”

PETA points out that dogs and cats are especially vulnerable in the winter, with multiple deaths, injuries, and near-miss rescues making headlines every year—and most incidents aren’t even reported. In addition to keeping animal companions indoors with their human families, PETA recommends keeping walks short with dogs in cold weather and having them wear a coat, a secure harness, and booties to protect their sensitive paw pads from the frozen ground. Alert local law enforcement authorities immediately to any dog kept chained or penned outside 24/7 or without adequate shelter from the elements. If officers don’t respond, call PETA at 757-622-PETA.

Kane is part of a long list of athletes—including Jalen Smith, Lonnie Walker, Metta Sandiford-Artest, Tyrann Mathieu, Christen Press, John Salley, and Elena Delle Donne—who have teamed up with PETA to promote kindness to animals.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on XFacebook, or Instagram.
