Dough-lightful! Two Southern Ontario Doughnut Shops Win PETA’s Top Ten Best Vegan Doughnut Shop Award

Cue the sprinkles, because just in time for National Doughnut Day (June 5), PETA is recognizing Canadian doughnut shops that dish up the most delectable donuts without using eggs or dairy—and two fully vegan doughnut shops in southern Ontario, Machino Donuts in West Toronto and Mmm Donuts in Barrie, have made the top ten list.

Machino Donuts serves a melt-in-your-mouth Matcha Bomboloni doughnut—deep-fried to perfection, filled with matcha whipped custard, and rolled in matcha sugar. Other delicious options include doughnut flavors like Cinnamon Sugar, Lemon Blueberry, Strawberry Shortcake, and Cookies N’ Cream, as well as vegan cinnamon rolls, fritters, and doughnut holes.

Mmm Donuts serves a wide assortment of delicious doughnut flavors that rotate regularly, including the delectable Lemon Drop doughnut—filled with a zesty lemon custard and rolled in coconut with lemon icing—as well as Maple Blueberry, French Toast, Powdered Strawberry, Mint Nanaimo, and more. The shop also offers vegan cake, cookies, pies, and buns.

Chickens form complex social structures, and cows develop friendships over time. Yet in the egg industry, hens are crammed into wire cages or packed into filthy sheds where they can’t even spread their wings, and in the dairy industry, mother cows are forcibly impregnated, and their beloved calves are torn away from them shortly after birth so that humans can take their milk. Just like the animals who are violently killed for meat, hens’ and mother cows’ lives end at the slaughterhouse.

Every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year and reduces their own risk of developing heart disease and cancer. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help those looking to make the switch.

Machino Donuts and Mmm Donuts will each receive a framed award certificate from PETA, along with bragging rights. Other winners on PETA’s list include Bronuts & Coffee in Winnipeg, Manitoba; Lucky’s Doughnuts in Vancouver, British Columbia; Léché Desserts in Montreal; Bramble Cafe in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Hoopla Donuts in Calgary, Alberta; Darkside Donuts in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Get Caked Donuts in Summerside, Prince Edward Island; and La Beignerie in Montreal.

Machino Donuts is located at 1556 Bloor St., in West Toronto, and is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Mmm Donuts is located at 240 Bayview Dr., Unit 11, in Barrie, and is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
