Please see the following statement from PETA Chief Science Advisor for Primate Experimentation Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel regarding a just-posted U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection report citing the University of Washington for four violations of the Animal Welfare Act after veterinary and other staff failed to provide prescribed pain medication to two monkeys and two dogs following procedures, left monkeys without food or water overnight after surgery or sedation, and failed to properly sanitize monkey cages for months:

Veterinary and animal care staff who deny dogs and monkeys pain relief, food, and water in the university’s underground laboratories expose a system in complete disarray. These are just the latest violations in a shameful record of 20 animal welfare failures in fewer than three years. A university that repeatedly falls short of even its most basic obligations to animals is either unwilling or unable to improve and its laboratories should be shut down.
